Nearly a million people attended Guevara’s memorial ceremony in Havana eight days later. A print of Korda’s photograph hung down five stories of a government building in Havana’s Plaza de la Revolucion. The scene inspired a permanent steel sculpture of Guerrillero Heroico that marks the place today. At the podium, Castro declared that Guevara’s revolutionary ideas “have and will continue to have universal value.”

Castro’s prediction may not have come true without the help of many artists. There was a newly created poster in the crowd at Guevara’s memorial. One of Korda’s friends, artist Jose Gomez Fresquet, also known as Fremez, had printed Korda’s Guerrillero Heroico in ghostly gray ink on red paper. The Cuban government continued to rely on artists, as it did photographers, and it later enlisted artist Antonio Perez Gonzalez, also known as Niko, to print an official bold, two-tone poster.
